Toi Toi Guy

I am a dance, experimental media and crochet artist based in Newcastle. My dance practice opens imagination portals to other worlds where freedom, authenticity, queerness, co-operation and dreams are valuable towards my root ambition of healing, resistance to capitalism and reclaiming the human experience. This manifests in choreographed performances, improvisations and screendance.

My solo performances explore ritual, trancing and journeying as in GenieReal99, an online interactive wish-granting portal and Chrysalis, a spinning meditation/transformation. Works shown at #Cam4Art, Battersea Arts Centre, Shipley Art Gallery, Tusk Festival. In 2016 I took part in the Koumaria Residency in Greece culminating in a performance at Onassis Cultural Centre, Athens.

I completed a Contemporary Dance BA at LCDS, then worked primarily as a performer and collaborator with Surface Area Dance Company, Curious Arts, Harriet Plewis, Gillie Kleiman. My screendance ‘Worm’ (2016) was shown at Video Dans Burgundy, Spontaneous Combustion London and ‘Future Study #1’ (2013) was shown at Pool’13 Berlin, Dance Umbrella London, Dança em Foco Brazil.

In 2017-2020 I went exploring my mothers homeland and my heritage in Colombia, working and learning with restorative cultural memory organisations in rural territories, researching native agricultural practice, folk music, dance and crafts.

In 2021 I returned to Newcastle, since then...
I co-founded Colombian-Brazilian folk group Colibri Cobra hosting performances and workshops, began selling crochet creations as Toi Toi Tejidos, performed as dancer and musician with Surface Area Dance Theatre, began explorations and creations around queerness with Jesse Salaman, took part in David Zambrano's Flying Low/Passing Through Intensive in Brussels and collaborated with sonic-visual artist Kiik Amor.
